I am the last person to ever admit to being homesick. I have a desire to seen as strong that is unable to be fulfilled. Sometimes, even the toughest people have their "weak" moments. My weak moments away at school almost solely connect to some form of homesickness. Being away from home for school, for vacation, even for good is a tough transition for anyone. Missing where you grew up does not make you weak, it makes you human. Here are a few tips to keep your homesickness in check.
- Distract yourself. Do your schoolwork, read a book, go to work, go for a run, anything to keep yourself busy.
- Make yourself familiar with your new living location. The more you explore and find places you like in this new, fresh setting the more comfortable you become with your new home.
- Look through old pictures. This may or may not be a good choice. Scroll through Facebook albums with caution. When I see pictures of school dances or summer adventures, I remember the good times and it makes me feel happy for a little while. It also could make you miss home even more, so know your limitations with this one.
- Cry a little. A few tears never killed anybody. Put on a sad song and cry it out. You are not weak for showing a little bit of emotion.
- Call back home. Whether it be a parent, sibling, aunt, uncle, friend, or even neighbor, sometimes all you need is a little familiarity to keep on going.
